[01:30] [Data] They only have 1 T3 Pipe feeding 3 counties
[01:30] [Ninex] wow
[01:31] [Ninex] thats a HUGE block
[01:31] [Data] And outside of a few others, I was the only one that noticed the upload and the novice users just get off the computer because they think the internet is just slow the said night
[01:33] [Data] I wonder if I could complain to AT&T about them
[01:34] [Tarcas] What's AT&T got to say about it?
[01:34] [Data] Nothing, I havent called them
[01:34] [Data] You think it would do any good?
[01:34] [Tarcas] But I'll bet the BW chart for that DS3 is all horizontal.
[01:34] [Data] Man this test will be slower. 470 ping time
[01:34] [Tarcas] I don't know why. Are they an AT&T subsidiary or something?
[01:35] [Data] Well I know the Pipe is via AT&T
[01:35] [Data] And when you call tech support, it goes to a call center...
[01:35] [Data] And they arent paying for that, I dont think
[01:36] [Data] Company actually called Broadband Support
[01:36] [Tarcas] What's AT&T care how they use their DS3. But what they MAY do is call them and say "Hey, your tube is clogged, best call the plumber and get the pipe stretched."
[01:36] [Data] Yea
[01:39] [Data] No matter what the deal is, Im tired of it. I understand tech problems once in a while.. but 6 weeks straight is crazy
[01:40] [Data] They offer 8 meg connection, Im telling him to either get me to hold the 1.5 or bump me up to the 8 and charge me for the 1.5 so I can hold a steady 1.5
[01:40] [Tarcas] good luck with that.
[01:41] [Tarcas] I'm curious where you're being throttled, and I'm guessing it's at the DS3 headend, not in your own ISP's network.
[01:42] [Tarcas] which means it doesn't matter what you're paying for, you get the same service regardless. Unless they give the premium customers a higher prio.

[01:42] [Data] But very seldom
[01:42] [Tarcas] I'd love to see the BW charts for that DS3
[01:43] [Data] Think they will get them for me to see?
[01:43] [Tarcas] nope. But you can ask.
[01:43] [Data] Lol
[01:43] [Tarcas] Find the circuit ID and call AT&T. :-D
[01:43] [Data] So I know, what is the BW Charts and what do they show?
[01:43] [Data] Ok, where do I find that?
[01:44] [Tarcas] bandwidth charts. Should look like a spikey graph, but if they hit the top (in the case of a DS3, 45 Mbps) you're exceeding and therefore dropping packets.
[01:44] [Tarcas] And when they hit the top and go horizontal, that saturation is sustained and you know you're in REALLY bad shape.
[01:44] [Data] Me myself, or them as a ISP?
[01:45] [Tarcas] whoever is using the circuit. If it's the DS3, then the ISP and anyone they serve. If it's your tail circuit, then you individually.
[01:46] [Data] Yea but Im not doing anything that would cause that big of a problem..
[01:46] [Data] *calls the ISP Support Center. Maybe they will pull it up..
[01:46] [Tarcas] And you need to check both inbound and outbound. They should both be 45 Mbps on a DS3, and if either flatlines, you've got trouble.
[01:49] [Tarcas] Now with most apps (E-mail, web browsing) bumping the top short-term isn't a big deal. You just retransmit the lost packets and everything runs a little slower. With stuff like video, you need a most consistent stream, but you can still deal. With something like VOIP, you can tolerate some delay but not much jitter (change in delay), so it gets worse. With real-time data like the stock ticks I deal with at work, bumping that top causes some p
[01:49] [Data] one time they disconnected me for excessive bandwith. Made me scan for viruses
[01:49] [Data] that was a 1year ago
[01:49] [Tarcas] What were you doing?
[01:49] [Data] nothing
[01:49] [Data] had a virus
[01:50] [Tarcas] ah. So E-mail spamming. :-P
[01:50] [Data] yea
[01:50] [Tarcas] Check for that again, because that will cause what you're seeing.
[01:50] [Tarcas] Your tests aren't for the whole pipe, they're for the available portion (generally equal to any one highly-bandwidth-intensive app)
[01:52] [Tarcas] See if you can get a bandwidth chart for your tail circuit (your own connection, or if need be for your branch of the cable tree: <=8 subscribers in total)
[01:53] [Tarcas] Look there before you blame the whole company's pipe. It'll make you look nicer to begin with, and may prevent you from looking like a complete @$$.
[01:53] [Tarcas] Anyway, bedtime. Good luck.
[01:53] [Mack] night Tarcas
[01:53] [Mack] i had my isp shut me down once for the same reason
[01:53] [Mack] but i had someone packeting thru my email account
[01:54] [Mack] they found it

[01:54] [Tarcas] Data: Another test you can do tonight is a traceroute, and then a ping test to each node. Find where the delays and/or packet loss is introduced.
[01:54] [Mack] thats a good idea
[01:54] [Data] Trace to where?
[01:54] [Data] Or ping what?
[01:55] [Data] She has me on hold right now... Pulled the Chart
[01:55] [Data] Pulling*
[01:55] [Tarcas] Trace to something past the T3. Anything.
[01:55] [Tarcas] Then ping each hop along the path.
[01:56] [Data] ok
[01:56] [Tarcas] Your speed test site would be a good candidate.
[01:56] [Tarcas] That way if the problems are being introduced in AT&T's network, you can see that.
[01:56] [Tarcas] What charting tool do they use? Will she tell you?
[01:57] [Data] Ok Im doing that right now
[01:57] [Data] Will ask
[01:58] [Data] she dont know
[01:59] [Tarcas] It would also be good to find out what the polling interval on the chart is. The shorter the better. 5 minute is junk, 1 minute is getting better. 2-second is pretty darned good.
[01:59] [Data] She said everything looks finme
[01:59] [Tarcas] BW measurements aren't real-time, they're averaged over a period. The shorter the period is, the closer to the true number you get. I could get into a rant about this one...
[02:00] [Tarcas] Can she send you the chart? And can I see it?
[02:00] [Data] No and She hung up on me
[02:00] [Tarcas] "fine" how? you're using your 1.5 Mb, or you're using 700k?
[02:00] [Data] Now I am HOT!

[02:53] [Jay] lol

[02:53] [Jay] i hear ya

[03:16] [Data] Depends on the package you get

[03:17] [Data] The thing about DSL is, DSL doesnt share bandwidth like Cable
[03:17] [Jay] nope ... DSL cant meet cable speeds
[03:17] [Data] Here they can..
[03:17] [zEkE] lol
[03:17] [Jay] uhuh ... sure
[03:17] [zEkE] the difference is how it's applied
[03:17] [Data] DSL here offers 10mbs versus Cable offering 8mbs
[03:17] [Jay] indeed
[03:18] [zEkE] put 1000 people through a 1gpbs switch and they'll get 1mbps each
[03:18] [zEkE] put 10 people, they'll get 100mbps each
[03:18] [zEkE] assuming they're all using it equally
[03:18] [Jay] :-)
[03:18] [zEkE] the company will advertise it as 1000mbps
[03:19] [zEkE] but shared
[03:19] [zEkE] whereas with DSL you're limited by distance and line quality factors and the ISP setup
[03:19] [Jay] yep
[03:19] [Jay] i prefer cable
[03:19] [Jay] i always get better speeds
[03:19] [zEkE] DSL may be limited by the ISP to 10mbps, but it's more likely that it'll perform around 6 or 7
[03:19] [Jay] as i dont live next door to the phn co
[03:20] [zEkE] maybe less, depending how far from the exchange, and how good the copper is
[03:20] [Jay] yep :-(

[03:22] [Jay] lol
[03:22] [Jay] stopped streaming music
[03:22] [zEkE] there are good ISP's and bad ISP's, a good DSL co will beat a bad cable company any day of the week
[03:22] [Jay] what is the other one Speakeasy ?
[03:23] [zEkE] but as far as the technology goes, I think cable is *capable* of a lot better speeds than DSL is
[03:23] [Jay] i have never had DSL be good and never seen it beat my cbl here in my town

[03:25] [zEkE] it's decent speed but slow, and basic internet, but it's incredibly cheap....like....$50/mo or something

[21:51] [zEkE] http://aebike.com/page.cfm?PageID=30&action=details&sku=BR7588 <-- they seem like they're cheap enough though
[21:51] [mowse] oh sure....i stay in here for a while and nobody talks, but when i look away, people start talking
[21:52] [Ninex] haha
[21:52] [zEkE] i need to do similar gear adjustments on the other one, but i wanna make sure this one is settled in first...i nearly went over the front riding it twice after things fell apart and it....stopped...suddenly..
[21:52] [zEkE] lol
[21:52] [Ninex] ten bucks isn't bad
[21:52] [zEkE] soz mowse, i'll stay quiet next time :P
